This examination emerged as a new option in ultrasonic imaging 10 years ago. This method generates a three-dimensional image from a series of classical two-dimensional images.
Facial image of the foetus
Parents find this type of imaging very attractive. For the uninitiated, orientation in a classical 2D image can be problematic. A 3D image of good quality shows the surfaces and structures of the foetus fairly well. It resembles a regular black-and-white photograph, so that the parents‘ vision of their child is quite real and concrete.
Is this examination longer than a standard ultrasound test?
Yes. The instrument allows all data to be processed in real time, so the imaging procedure is the same as in a standard ultrasound scan. However, since the procedure is more sensitive to foetal position and acoustic conditions, it usually takes longer to capture the foetus in an optimal position for imaging.
Does the instrument offer any other possibilities?
This very realistic imaging is useful in prenatal diagnoses of facial abnormalities as well as various syndromes. Images of cleft deformities make it possible to provide the parents with a factual assessment of the affliction. If consultations ensue, the plastic surgeon can better visualize corrective possibilities.
When genetic syndromes are detected, precise syndromologic categorization is usually impossible. However, 3D imaging often allows early identification of potentially stigmatized foetuses and the parents can thus be alerted to the possibility of a genetic syndrome after delivery.
What are the limitations of the 3D/4D technology?
It should be kept in mind that this type of examination does not replace the classical 2D scan but complements it.
In some cases (such as unfavourable foetus position, small amount of amniotic fluid, poor acoustic conditions, etc.), even this sophisticated technology does not yield high-quality images.
What is the optimal gestation time for the examination?
While this examination can be done at any time, the optimal foetal imaging is between the 22nd and the 26th week of pregnancy.
Is it necessary to have an appointment for this examination?
Yes. Considering the required time, it is necessary to allow a greater time window for this examination.
